Cardinals keep up winning ways vs. Bethel

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team entered Saturday riding a season-opening two-match winning streak.

When the final point was decided, however, the Cardinals were no longer unbeaten — but they also found themselves in the midst of a two-match losing streak.

Bethel picked up three singles wins and a pair of doubles victories in slipping past the Cardinals 5-4, while Carleton — facing a worn out SMU team — cruised to a 9-0 MIAC win later in the day.

"The women played very well against Bethel — it was one of those matches that easily could have gone either way," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "We just didn't have anything left in the tank (against Carleton). We just ran out of gas, plain and simple."

Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Liz Hilke (Baraboo, Wis.) and Jennifer Cochran (Winona, Minn.) all picked up straight-set singles wins, while Cochran and Christina Tobin (Oak Park, Ill.) teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Nothing seemed to go right for SMU vs. Carleton, as the Knights won all six singles matches in straight sets, and swept the three doubles matches, not giving up more than four points in any of the three.
