WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team played nearly as well Sunday afternoon against regionally ranked Carleton as they did the day before against Bethel.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the end result certainly didn't show that.
Just 24 hours after picking up their second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win with a 6-3 triumph over Bethel on Saturday, SMU was handed a 9-0 setbackby the Knights Sunday at the SMU Tennis Center.
"We ran in to a buzzsaw today," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "Carleton is ranked eighth in the region, and they showed us why.
"We put up a good battle, but they were talented and deep."
The Knights dropped just one set in sweeping the six singles matches, as
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) took William Holmes to three sets before falling 1-6, 6-1, 10-3 at No. 1 singles.
"It was a tough loss, but I'm confident this group will bounce back," said Halberg. "This is a talented group, and this was nothing more than a bump in the road for them."
