WINONA, Minn. — The streak continued for Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) Wednesday afternoon, as the Saint Mary's University tennis player won his fifth straight singles match, posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Luther's Ryan Sommers.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Stevenson's streak wasn't the only one that remained in tact Wednesday, as Luther won the other five singles matches and two of the three doubles matches in handing SMU its third straight loss, 6-1.
"We ran into a tough Luther team," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "According to their coach, their No. 3, 4 and 5 singles players played their best tennis of the year — and they had to choose us to do it against.
"Tyler played another strong match — he is just unstoppable right now."
Speaking of unstoppable, the SMU women ran into an unstoppable team in St. Catherine, as the regionally ranked Wildcats cruised to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Cardinals Wednesday.
"St. Kate's showed us today why they are ranked in the region — they are a tough, consistent team," said Halberg, whose team failed to win a set against the Wildcats. "Hopefully both teams will be able to bounce back this weekend."
