WINONA, Minn. — After the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was manhandled by St. Catherine 9-0 Wednesday, SMU coach
Jeff Halberg vowed that his team would rebound and that the Cardinals would be a different team when they returned to the court Thursday against UW-Stout.
And the Cardinals made sure Halberg was true to his word.
In fact, the only similarity between Wednesday's match and Thursday's was the final score.
In reverse.
"This was a great way for us to show that (the St. Catherine match) was just a one-time thing — one time we didn't play up to our abilities," said Halberg after his team won all six singles matches in straight sets en route to Thursday's 9-0 win over UW-Stout. "The ladies were determined to get back to their winning ways — and they did so in style."
The Cardinals had little trouble against the Blue Devils, not losing more than four games in any of the 12 singles sets. And SMU was just as dominant in doubles, winning No. 1 and No. 2 by 8-1 scores, then taking No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 count.
"We needed to bounce back like this," said Halberg. "Everyone played great from top to bottom."
