Game 1 Boxscore / Game 2 Boxscore
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — After managing just four runs in their last three games – all losses — the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team was in dire need of a confidence-booster.
Enter St. Olaf.
The Cardinals feasted on Ole pitching Saturday afternoon, erupting for 11 runs in both games of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader — sweeping St. Olaf 11-0 and 11-3.
Offensive slump? What offensive slump?
The Cardinals actually only managed six hits in the five-inning, Game 1 rout, but they made them count, scoring six times in the third inning and five times in the fourth en route to the opening-game win. Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) provided the offensive fireworks in SMU's six-run third, belting a three-run home run, her team-leading third of the season.
SMU took advantage of three St. Olaf errors in the fourth, scoring four unearned runs, while also getting an RBI single from Mandy Tschernach (Rice Lake, Wis.).
The Cardinals' offense really got on track in Game 2, as SMU battered two St. Olaf pitchers for 14 hits, scoring three times in the third, fifth and seventh innings, while also adding single runs in the first and fourth. Jenni Gutterman (Shoreview, Minn.) drove in three runs in the second game, two in the seventh on the second of her Game 2 triples.
