Cardinals come up empty at MIAC Tournament

ST. PETER, Minn. — The first time the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team faced St. Olaf, the Cardinals escaped with a 6-3 victory in the team's regular-season finale.

So it would be a safe assumption that, when the Cardinals faced the Oles again Saturday afternoon in the fifth-place semifinal match of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, SMU would be the favorite to win again.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, someone forgot to explain that to the Oles.

Despite dropping two of the three doubles matches, St. Olaf won five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-3 win over the Cardinals.

Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) and Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles and Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and Andrew Pamperin (Menomonie, Wis.) added an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the match.

That, however, would be as close as SMU would get as the Oles dominated five of the six singles matches, including a three-set, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 win by Ted Nagel over Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) at No. 1 — Stevenson's first loss since a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Gustavus' Kyle Anderson on March 27. Miller recorded SMU's lone singles win, posting a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 4.

Things didn't go any better in the Cardinals' second match of the day, as Hamline won three of the four completed singles matches and two of the three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 victory.

Stevenson rebounded from his streak-snapping loss to Nagel with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hamline's John Schollmeier. The win was Stevenson's 17th of the season as the sophomore finished 17-4. Haville and Solseth accounted for SMU's only other win, posting an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles.

"I was pretty pleased with our effort all weekend," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "This was a very young team (the Cardinals return their entire lineup next season) and I thought we showed a lot of progress. A couple of nagging injuries slowed us down a bit, but overall it was a positive season."
