NORTHFIELD, Minn. — After opening the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Friday with an impressive 8-1 win over Hamline — their school-record 11th win of the season — things just went from bad to worse for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team.
Bad:A second-round showdown against Gustavus, a team that hadn't lost to an MIAC school in 13 years — a span of 132 straight matches.
Make that 133, as the Gusties blanked SMU 9-0 in Friday's second round.
Worse: The Cardinals followed that Gustie loss up with a second-straight setback, a 6-3, season-ending defeat at the hands of St. Thomas.
Liz HIlke (Baraboo, Minn.) picked up a singles and a doubles win for the Cardinals, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, then teamed with
Jennifer Cochran (Winona, Minn.) for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
Lisa Thompson (Lake City, Minn.) accounted for the Cardinals' other win, notching a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles.
