NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The big inning haunted the Saint Mary's University baseball team last Wednesday, when the Cardinals gave up 12 runs in the third inning of a 23-3 nonconference loss to cross-town rival Winona State.
And the big inning came back to haunt the Cardinals against Saturday, as St. Olaf erupted for 11 sixth-inning runs en route to a 15-3 Game 2 win and a sweep of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of the Cardinals Saturday afternoon.
The Oles' Joe Ruud outdueled SMU's Aric Kittelson (Prescott, Wis.) in the opener, as St. Olaf escaped with a 2-1 victory.
The nightcap, however, was anything but a pitcher's duel, as the Oles spotted the Cardinals a 2-0 first-inning lead, then responded with four runs in the fourth and 11 more in the sixth to seal the victory.
Matt Rink (Rochester, Minn.),
Dusty Wilhelmy (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and
Jose Rueda (Winona, Minn.) all had two hits for the Cardinals in the second game, with Rueda also drive in two of SMU's four runs.
Kittelson did more than his fair share for SMU in the opener, holding St. Olaf to just two runs on six hits, while waking one and striking out three. Ruud, however, was just a shade better, allowing just four hits – singles by
Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.),
Ryan Majerus (St. Charles, Minn.),
Pat Gornick (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Nick Winecke (St. Paul, Minn.) — while striking out 13 and walking just one.
