Game Summary

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Heading into Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team had scored five goals in its last two games.

Problem was, the Cardinals were just 1-1 in those games, scoring all five goals in a 5-0 win vs. Rockford. In fact, in SMU's first six games, the Cardinals had netted just seven goals — five vs. the Regents, and two in a 2-2 tie vs. Edgewood.

Scoring goals has been the Cardinals' Achilles' heel this season — and Wednesday, the Auggies took advantage.

Augsburg scored three times in the first half — twice before the game was even 20 minutes old — and added two more in the second in handing SMU its fourth shutout loss of the season, 5-0.

Mike Eicano opened the scoring for Augsburg at the eight-minute mark, scoring the first of his two goals, then sandwiched his second around one by teammate Mark Cohn to give the Auggies a 3-0 halftime lead. Ben Simonet and Alec Rabine scored less than a minute apart midway through the second half to account for Augsburg's other two goals.

The Cardinals (0-2-0 MIAC, 1-4-2 overall) return to action Saturday, playing host to Marian at 3 p.m.
