Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Entering Saturday's nonconference contest against Saint Mary's University, the Marian College men's soccer team was looking for its first win of the season.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, were looking for their second win — and a stop to their current two-game losing streak.

When the final horn sounded, Marian left the field with its first win, a 2-0 shutout — and the Cardinals were on the losing end of their third straight, and their fifth shutout loss of the season.

And the worst part is, SMU has only lost five games.

"We wanted to come in and play with energy and enthuasiam, and we did that," SMU coach Eric Luzzi said of Saturday's game. "We just couldn't get a win, but everyone on the field at the end of the game deserves some credit."

And when you think of everyone, everyone should include 11 athletes.

But not this time.

After receiving six cautions resulting in yellow cards and two resulting in red cards, Saint Mary's was left to play the final 24 minutes of the game with only nine athletes on the field to Marian's full field of 11.

Although the Cardinals (1-5-2) posted nine shots on the game to the Sabres' 13, Marian took 11 of its shots in the second half, when SMU lacked two men on the field.

Marian's Chuck Bergs scored the team's first goal at the game's 36 minute mark off an assist from teammates Jim Taylor and Joel Rieth. The team's second goal was scored nine minutes into the second half, when Marian midfielder Nick Bona found the net unassisted.

SMU returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC match against Gustavus.
