No. 10 UW-L puts quick end to streak

LA CROSSE, Wis. — After breezing through the River City Classic field en route to the eight-team tournament title last weekend, the Saint Mary's University volleyball team extended its season-opening winning streak to a near school-record five straight.

A win against UW-La Crosse on Wednesday would give SMU six straight wins to start the season, equaling the best-ever start by a Cardinal volleyball team in school history.

Just one little win against UW-La Crosse.

Tenth-ranked UW-La Crosse.

And the Eagles showed why the AVCA ranked them No. 10 in the country, dominating the Cardinals en route to a 3-0, 30-18, 30-20, 30-14 nonconference win.

Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) led the Cardinals' offense, collecting nine kills and hitting .318, while Megan Roesler (St. Paul, Minn.) and Tracy Koertgen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each added six kills. Lisa Engdahl (North Branch, Minn.) finished with a team-high 11 digs and Tessa Stranik (Eatonville, Wash.) dished out 35 assists.

As a team, SMU (5-1 overall) hit just .113, knocking down 40 kills in 133 attempts. UW-L (5-0 overall), meanwhile, hit .348 as a team, getting 19 kills from Laura Wagner and 19 digs from Lindsey Johnson.
