Box Score Game Summary
ST. PAUL, Minn. — With a defense like that, who needs an offense?
For the second straight game, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team — led by sophomore goalie Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) — held Hamline without a goal as the Cardinals completed their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of the Pipers with a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who improved to 11-0-0 against the Pipers all-time, have now outscored Hamline 26-0 in the teams' last five meetings — including shutout wins of 7-0, 8-0 and 5-0 a year ago.
SMU, which outshot Hamline 40-7 en route to Friday's 4-0 whitewashing, fired 36 more shots on the Hamline net on Saturday — getting a first-period goal from Amy Madden (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and a third-period tally from Jenna Roland (Boyne City, Mich.).
Madden netted her first goal as a Cardinal with just 1:47 remaining in the first period to give Jung and Co. all the offense they would need. Roland added her third of the year midway through the third period as the Cardinals improved to 4-4-0 in the MIAC and 6-7-0 overall.
With Madden and Roland providing the offense, Jung did her part between the pipes, stopping all 19 shots she faced in posting her second shutout in two nights.
