Game Summary

ST. PETER, Minn. —The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team gave up half as many goals as they did Friday night — and the Cardinals scored twice as many.

Problem was, Friday night's final score against Gustavus was 8-1, meaning twice as many goals scored was two, and half the goals against was four.

Gustavus broke open a 1-1 game with a pair of second-period goals, and held off a third-period SMU charge to post a 4-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Cardinals Saturday evening.

Gustavus jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal from Mike Hosfield at 2:39 of the first period. Cardinals goaltender Ryne Ess (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was unable to hang onto a Keith Detlefsen slap shot and Hosfield snagged the rebound and placed the puck into the goal. Saint Mary's tied the game at one goal apiece two minutes later on a goal by Adam Gill (Rochester, Minn.) — his second in as many nights.

Adam Meyer and Kyle Menken scored five minutes apart early in the second period as the Gusties rode a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal to a 3-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

The Cardinals, who have now dropped four straight, pulled within one when Bill Flynn (St. Louis, Mo.) scored at 12:36 of the third period, but GAC's Keith Detlefsen scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining to ice the win.
