WNONA, Minn. —
Eric Lindquist would have loved to see his Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams pick up a couple of dual-meet victories in their home finale Saturday afternoon against UW-River Falls.
But after watching the performances of his five graduating seniors, the final team scores hardly mattered.
"Obviously you hate to lose, but the performances of our seniors — as well as everyone else on this team — were outstanding," said Lindquist, whose men dropped a 99-53 decision to the Falcons, while the SMU women were defeated 106-87. "We had nine first-place finishes today — that's awesome. Unfortunately, we just didn't have enough depth in the other events to carry us through."
Not that the final score really mattered.
Seniors Jenny Moore (Richfield, Minn.), Becca Grube (Appleton, Wis.), Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.),
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) and
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) made the final home meet of their collegiate careers one to remember as all five turned in stellar performances.
Moore won both the one-meter (160.90) and three-meter (171.35) diving events, while Grube was second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.44) and DeLaRosby was second in the 50 freestyle, clocking a lifetime-best time of 25.87. Gibson notched a pair of firsts, going 22.47 in the 50 freestyle and 49.98 in the 100, with Twedt chipping in second-place efforts in the 500 freestyle (5:20.23) and 1,000 freestyle (11:03.03).
"I couldn't be happier for our graduating class," said Lindquist. "They have put in so much time and effort — they have worked so hard over the years — this was just a perfect way for them to go out."
Overshadowed by the SMU senior's swan song, however, was the performance of a pair of Cardinal freshman, as Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.), broke her 100 breaststroke school record for the third time this season — winning the event in 1:12.89 — while Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.) picked up firsts in both the 500 freestyle (5:54.97) and the 1,000 freestyle (12:09.49).
"This was a big meet for us — not only for the seniors, but for everyone," said Lindquist. "We are hitting our peak at just the right time."
