Game Summary
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Scoring goals has not been a forte of the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team this season.
In fact, heading into Saturday's game against Concordia, the Cardinals had managed just four goals in their first eight games.
When the final horn sounded vs. the Cobbers, however, the Cardinals had doubled that offensive output — thanks in large part to Mike Schmitt (Woodridge, Ill.).
Schmitt scored three goals as SMU snapped its two-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Cobbers.
"It was a good win for us — especially from an offensive standpoint," said SMU coach Eric Luzzi, whose team moved to 2-3 in the MIAC and 2-6-1 overall. "I don't think it was necessarily one of our best performances, so it's comforting to know that this team came out and got the win despite having an off day."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 first-half advantage, only to have Concordia battle back to tie the game 2-2 midway through the second half. From there, it was Schmitt to the rescue as the SMU junior scored twice in the game's final six minutes to ice the Cardinals' second conference win of the year.
"Mike had a great game for us," said Luzzi of his junior midfielder, who netted his team's final three goals, after
John Vik (St. Paul, Minn.) had given SMU an early 1-0 lead. "It was one of those days where everything he put on goal went in.
"We needed a game like this — we needed our offense to get on track, which is, hopefully, what this game will do for us," said Luzzi. "But, on the other hand, overall, we need to play better than we did today.
"If we play like this (next Saturday vs. St. Thomas), we'll be in big trouble."
