Game Summary
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Tony Guinn called last Saturday's 1-0 overtime loss to St. Thomas one of the most frustrating losses of his career as the head coach of the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.
Not only was the loss SMU's third in its last four games, but it was also the third time in the same span that the Cardinals had failed to score a goal.
Rather than dwell on the loss — and their recent inability to put the ball in the net — the Cardinals decided to do something about it.
Which is exactly what SMU did Tuesday afternoon, as the Cardinals took out their frustrations on St. Olaf, scoring single goals in each half en route to a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win.
"This was a great win for us," said Guinn, noting that the Oles came into Tuesday's game riding a four-game unbeaten streak. "I was really proud of the way we played. (Saturday's game vs. St. Thomas) was a tough loss to swallow — it was one of the most frustrating games I've been involved in here at Saint Mary's.
"But everyone did a nice job of putting that game behind them and focusing on (St. Olaf," continued Guinn. "This was probably the best game we've played all year."
Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half, and
Amy Cory (Crystal Lake, Ill.) added her fourth goal of the season with two minutes remaining in regulation to seal the win.
Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) stopped all 11 shots she faced in posting her sixth shutout of the season.
"We needed to get things back on track," said Guinn, whose team returns to conference action Saturday, playing host to Augsburg. "We're to the point in the season now that every game is important —and we are going to need performances like we got today each and every time we step on the field."
