STEVENS POINT, Wis. — In their season-opening 4-4 tie against UW-Eau Claire, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team had an answer for every goal the Blugolds scored.

Saturday evening against UW-Stevens Point, there were no answers — just a lot of questions.

The Pointers erupted for seven goals in the second period, breaking open a 2-1 game an cruising to a 10-1 win over the Cardinals in a nonconference game.

"I don't know what to say, it was like a bad dream that I couldn't wake up from," said SMU coach Don Olson. "We did such a nice job of battling back (on Friday against UW-Eau Claire). It seemed like every time the (Blugolds) would score, we'd answer right back.

"Tonight, Stevens Point got on a roll and just never stopped."

The Pointers jumped out to a 2-0 lead before SMU's Adam Gill (Rochester, Minn.) netted his second of the season to get the Cardinals to within one, 2-1 by the end of the first period.

That, however, was as close as the Cardinals would get as the Pointers rattled for seven second-period goal and added another in the third to seal the win.

"I knew coming in that we were going to have our hands full," said Olson, noting that the Pointers were coming off a 3-2 win over third-ranked St. Thomas on Friday. "They are a very good team and they never let up."

The Pointers pelted three SMU goalies — starter Nick Berra (St. Louis, Mo.) and backups Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) and Gregg Stutz (Centerville, Minn.) — with 49 shots, while the Cardinals managed just 28 shots.

"Despite the final score, I thought our goalies played very well — it could have easily been a lot worse," said Olson. "This was a tough one — one that we need to put behind us as fast as we can."
