MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team peppered Augsburg goalie Amanda Bockmann with 46 shots in Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game, yet, all the Cardinals had to show for their efforts was a single goal.

And that was almost enough to give the Cardinals their first conference win of the season.

Almost.

With the Cardinals clinging to that 1-0 lead and pressing to get goal No. 2 early in the third period, Augsburg's Katie Medd snuck behind the SMU defenders, got a pass from teammate Samantha Farrell and broke in alone and beat SMU goalie Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) with the game-tying goal as the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie.

"We certainly played well enough to win," said SMU coach Terry Mannor, who is still looking for his first conference win as the Cardinals' head coach. "You have to give (Bockmann) a lot of credit, she played a great game. We pretty much controlled the play, but we couldn't find a way to get the puck past her."

After a scoreless first period, Jessica Ribish (Elm Grove, Wis.) and the Cardinals finally got a puck past Bockmann, as the SMU junior netted her second of the season on the powerplay to give Saint Mary's the 1-0 lead heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

"It's a little disheartening to only come away with a tie, but in this conference, every point is important," said Mannor. "It was nice to see us create so many good scoring opportunities, hopefully (Saturday in the team's rematch at SMU) we can make good on a few more of them."
