Box Score Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — Friday evening, Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor felt like his team gave away a conference point when his Cardinals outshot Augsburg 46-20, but came away with a 1-1 tie.
Saturday evening, the Cardinals were once again in the giving mood, this time giving away both MIAC points, as Augsburg, despite being outshot 35-29, knocked off SMU 4-3 in overtime at the SMU Ice Arena.
"It's frustrating, it's disappointing … . We let this weekend get away from us," said Mannor, whose team saw its winless streak climb to six games (0-5-1) with the tie and loss vs. the Auggies. "I think (Friday's) tie really gave Augsburg a lot of confidence. We dominated that game, and yet they were able to escape with a tie.
"(Saturday) we did not play nearly as well as we did on Friday, and Augsburg, on the other hand, played much better," Mannor continued. "We just didn't move our feet, we didn't utilize our teammates as much — it just wasn't as good an effort."
And it cost them.
After a scoreless first period, Augsburg erupted for three second-period goals, while the Cardinals managed just a
Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) tally, as the Auggies took a 3-1 advantage into the locker room after two periods.
Laura Langen (New Lisbon, Wis.) cut the gap to 3-2 with her second of the season five minutes into the third period, and
Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the Cardinals even with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, as she banged in a rebound off a shot from teammate
Madeline Loftus (Parsippany, N.J.).
In overtime, however, it was all Augsburg, as the Auggies got off the period's only two shots — the second a wrist shot off the stick of Samantha Farrell that handcuffed SMU goalie
Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and found its way into the net.
"It's always tough to lose, and to lose in overtime like that makes it that much harder to swallow," said Mannor. "This weekend showed our evenly matched our two teams are, and I think that's the way its going to every weekend in this conference.
"And because of that, we can't afford to give away (conference) points like we did this weekend."
