SMU forced to settle another Friday tie

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — Terry Mannor must have felt like he had jumped into a time machine and was transported back a week when the final horn sounded Friday evening.

After all, the end result was the same — a tie.

The score was the same — 1-1.

The Cardinals' lone goal was scored in the same period — the second.

And Mannor felt the same way after Friday's 1-1 tie vs. St. Benedict as he did the previous Friday vs. Augsburg — disheartened.

"It's frustrating in the fact that we are playing well enough to win, we just can't seem to get over the hump," said Mannor, whose team has not won since opening the season with a 5-1 win over UW-Eau Claire — a span of seven games (0-5-2). "We played well in the first and third periods (vs. St. Benedict), but (the Blazers) outworked us in the second."

The Blazers got on the board first, scoring early in the second period, but SMU got the equalizer before the period was over, as Rachel Harrison (Madison, Wis.) netted her second goal of the season.

That, however, would be the extent of the Cardinals' offense, as SMU was held to one goal for the four time in the last seven games.

"I guess getting one point (for the tie) is better than nothing, but it's still disappointing that we weren't able to come away with a win," said Mannor, whose team has now played three straight overtime games. "We just need to find a way to play a complete 60 minutes of hockey. If we can do that, the wins will come."
