ST. PETER, Minn. — All it took was two swings of the bat to jump-start the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team's offense — and once the Cardinals' got into gear, there was no stopping them.
Jenni Gutterman (Shoreview, Minn.) belted a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning and Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) added a two-run double in the sixth to account for all of SMU's runs in the Cardinals' 5-3 win over Gustavus in the opening game of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
And the Cardinals picked up right where Gutterman and Jung left off in the nightcap, banging out 12 hits and scoring nine runs in completing the sweep wtih a 9-1, six-inning victory in Game 2.
"It's great to pick up two wins like this — especially on the road," said SMU coach Nikki Fennern, whose team moved to 6-2 in the MIAC and 14-6 overall with their fifth and sixth straight wins. "Gustavus came into today unbeaten (in the MIAC) and a team we figure we will be battling with a for a (conference tournament) spot, so it was nice to get two wins against them.
"Offensively, we started out a little slow, their pitcher (Joyce Dewitz) kept us off balance, but once we got on track, our hitting was contagious."
Jenny Schipp (North St. Paul, Minn.), who tossed a complete-game four-hitter in winning Game 1, was the offensive sparkplug in Game 2, collecting three hits in four at-bats, while also driving in a pair of runs — one on a third-inning single and the other on a sixth-inning double. Gutterman and Jung each added a pair of hits and Mandy Tschernach (Rice Lake, Wis.) drove in two runs as the Cardinals scored two runs in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.
Megan Wallisch (Loveland, Colo.) picked up the Game 2 pitching win, allowing one run on five hits in five innings. Kelly Rodgers (Plymouth, Minn.) pitched a perfect sixth, striking out two of the three batters she faced.
"We've got things rolling pretty good right now," said Fennern, whose team is back in action Thursday, traveling to Hamline for another MIAC doubleheader. "Hopefully we can keep it up."
