STEVENS POINT, Wis. — If the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was feeling any ill effects from last Sunday's heartbreaking 5-4 loss to St. Benedict – a loss that snapped SMU's season-high four-match winning streak — they certainly didn't show it Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals, fueled by straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches, got back on the winning track, beating UW-Stevens Point 7-2 in a nonconference match.

"The ladies put in a great performance," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "It was a perfect day for tennis and was nice to see us get right back on the winning track after that tough loss (to St. Benedict).

"Hopefully we can keep the momentum going heading into Saturday (vs. Macalester)."

Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Lisa Thompson (Lake City, Minn.), Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) and Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) were all singles winners, with none of the five losing more than three games in any of the 10 sets.

In doubles, Meschke and Thompson teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1, while Leeder and Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) added an 8-1 triumph at No. 3.
