MENOMONIE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team made it look easy Monday afternoon, as the Cardinals won their third straight match with an 8-1 nonconference decision over UW-Stout.
"The ladies put in another strong performance," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team has not only won three straight, but they have only been defeated once in their last eight matches. "(UW-Stout) had some solid players in their lineup, but we were up to the challenge."
The Cardinals swept all six singles matches — wining five of them in straight sets.
Michele Clarke (Omaha, Neb.) needed three sets to get past the Blue Devils' Elizabeth Hansen, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6, while the Cardinals did not lose more than four games in an of the other five singles matches.
Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) teamed with
Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Lisa Thompson (Lake City, Minn.) and
Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) were 8-2 winners at No. 3.
"We tried some new combinations and they looked promising," said Halberg. "The ladies are all playing very solid tennis right now, hopefully that can continue."
