WINONA, Minn. — With five matches in a seven-day period, Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals were in for a long week.
But, if the first two matches are any indications, the Cardinals are in it for the long haul.
SMU picked up wins in five of six singles matches Wednesday, as SMU won its second match of the week — and its fourth straight overall — with a 7-2 nonconference win over UW-River Falls.
"Everybody stepped up today," said Halberg. "We had a few people missing from the lineup, but you would not have known it by the way we played. It was nice to keep the (winning) streak going, and hopefully we can continue to play solid tennis in our three matches this weekend."
The Cardinals did not lose a set in any of their singles wins, while Annie Harala (Duluth, Minn.) missed out on making it a clean singles sweep when she dropped a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 decision at No. 6 singles.
Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and
Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) and Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) added an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
"We're playing well right now," said Halberg. "Everyone has really stepped up their game. Hopefully it will continue."
