MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Last Thursday, the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team managed just one run in splitting a nonconference doubleheader against UW-La Crosse.
A split that also snapped the Cardinals' season-high 12-game winning streak.
And unfortunately for Augsburg, the Cardinals took out their frustrations on the Auggies Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals belted three home runs – a solo shot by Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and a two-run shot by Jenni Gutterman (Shoreview, Minn.) in the first game and an inside-the-park, grand slam by Mandy Tschernach (Rice Lake, Wis.) in the second — and finished with eight extra-base hits among their 21 hits in the two games as SMU swept the Auggies, 11-3 and 9-1.
After being set down in order in the first inning, SMU's offense finally got on track, as the Cardinals scored three times in both the second and third, then added two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Krista Conway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) delivered an RBI triple, while Jenny Schipp (North St. Paul, Minn.) and Amy Edge (Montfort, Wis.) each chipped in doubles to pace the Cardinals' 12-hit attack.
The Cardinals needed just two innings to score all nine runs in the nightcap, as SMU plated three runs in the third — two coming on RBI singles from Conway and Gutterman — then put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth. Tschernach had the blow in the inning, making her first collegiate home run one to remember as she belted a shot to the deepest part of the park in right-center to clear the bases and give SMU a commanding 9-1 lead.
Megan Wallisch (Loveland, Colo.) picked up the Game 2 pitching win, allowing just three hits — all singles — while walking one and striking out four.
The Cardinals, who improved to 14-2 in the MIAC and 25-7 overall, return to action Tuesday, playing host to Bethel in the final home doubleheader of the season.
