WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew that Carleton was a very good team — probably one of the best in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Tuesday evening at the SMU Tennis Center, Halberg got a firsthand look at the Knights, and, unfortunately for Halberg and the Cardinals, Carleton lived up to its billing.
The Knights picked up wins in all eight matches they played in handing SMU an 8-1 setback.
"Carleton is one of the best teams in the conference and they proved that against us," said Halberg, whose team's lone win came at No. 1 singles, where
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) earned an injury default victory. "Top to bottom, they were just too deep for us."
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) gave the Knights' Peter Varnum all he could handle at No. 2 singles, falling in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 16-14. That, however, was the lone bright spot for the Cardinals, who dropped the other four singles matches in straight sets.
"I thought our doubles teams played well, and Mark's match at No. 2 (singles) was a really high-quality match," said Halberg. "We just weren't able to match their depth."
