NEW ULM, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team made it look easy Saturday afternoon, while Saturday's nonconference match against Martin Luther College was anything but easy for the SMU women.
Fortunately for the Cardinals, easy or not, the result was the same — a Saint Mary's victory.
The Cardinal men snapped a three-match winning streak, winning five of the six singles matches and all three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 victory,. The SMU women, meanwhile, dropped two of the three doubles matches, but rallied for singles wins at Nos. 3-6 and escaped with a 5-4 victory.
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.),
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.),
Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.),
Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) and
Dan Fahey (Brookfield, Ill.) all picked up singles wins, with Miller needing three sets to post a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 triumph over Brad Nehls at No. 3 singles. In SMU's other four singles wins, the Cardinals lost just five games.
Miller teamed with
Ryan Kennedy (Rochester, Minn.) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Solseth-Clements and Leeder-Fahey cruised to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
On the women's side, the Cardinals — winners of four straight — did not lose more than three games in any of the six singles sets they won. Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) Michele Clarke (Omaha, Neb.), Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) and Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) were victorious in singles play, while Clarke-Beissel and Leeder-Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) chipped in wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
