WINONA, Minn. — They led off with a double in the first and scored once … .

They led off with a single in the second and scored four times … .

They led off the fourth with a walk, and scored four more … .

See a pattern developing here?

Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University baseball team, it was a pattern they couldn't break, as Concordia scored at least one run in six of the eight innings in which they scored runs in sweeping Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Cobbers used a pair of four-run innings en route to a 9-3 victory in Game 1, then got a one-out, two-run home run from Chris Klabo in the top of the seventh in completing the sweep with a come-from-behind 6-4 win.

"Concordia's a good, good team," said SMU coach Nick Whaley. "They are well-coached, the play hard … they beat us today, plain and simple.

"Give (Concordia) credit, they are a playoff caliber team, and they played like it today," continued Whaley. "They did an outstanding job of getting the leadoff batter on, and then they did what they needed to do to get that runner in."

The Cardinals certainly didn't help their own cause in the twinbill, committing six errors — including five the in Game 1 loss.

"We didn't execute — and when you don't execute, you make it tough on yourself," said Whaley. "We gave them five extra outs (in the first game), and we didn't get the job done in the second.

"I thought we showed a bit of our immaturity out there today."

Concordia jumped on SMU starter Dan Cosgrove (South St. Paul, Minn.) for six hits and three runs in the top of the third inning of Game 2, but SMU responded with four runs of their own to take a 4-3 lead. The Cobbers got the tying run in the top of the sixth when Nick Esala led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a single by Scott Halupczok.

The Cobbers again got the leadoff man on in the top of the seventh, and, one out later, Klabo delivered his team-leading ninth home run of the season to deep left-center.

Concordia jumped out to a 9-0 cushion in the opener, before SMU finally got on the board on a two-run double by Kevin Black (Mahtomedi, Minn.) in the fifth and an RBI single by Black in the seventh.

"We hit the ball so well (in Tuesday's 18-3 rout of Viterbo), but we didn't have that same aggressive attitude at the plate today," said Whaley, whose team managed just 12 hits vs. the Cobbers. "It's tough to lose two like that — especially that second game. But all we can do now is shake it off, regroup, and get ready for (Sunday's MIAC finale vs.) St. Olaf."
