Game Summary

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Mike Schmitt (Woodridge, Ill.) closed out the 2004 men's soccer season with a team-best five goals, not to mention a team-leading 11 points.

And Thursday evening, the Saint Mary's University junior picked up right where he left off, scoring the game-tying goal on a penalty kick 13 minutes into the second half as the Cardinals rallied for a 1-1 season-opening tie against Simpson.

After a scoreless first half, Simpson netted the first goal of the season for either team, as Jordan Denman took a pass from Mark Pleiss and beat Cardinal goalkeeper Ryan O'Connor (San Diego, Calif.) at the 52:09 mark.

Just over six minutes later, however, it was Schmitt to the rescue, drilling his penality kick past Storm goalie Phillip Gravely.

The Cardinals (0-0-1 overall) return to action Saturday, traveling to St. Norbert for a nonconference game, before opening their home season on Monday, playing host to Loras.
