Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — Loras entered Monday's nonconference men's soccer match against Saint Mary's University unbeaten in its first two games of the season — a streak in which the Duhawks gave up just two shots on goal.
The Cardinals equalled the offensive output of the Duhawks' first two opponents combined — but still suffered the same fate, as Loras erupted for three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
"The effort and energy were lacking on Saturday (in SMU's 3-0 loss to St. Norbert) and it really wasn't any better today," said SMU coach Eric Luzzi, whose team dropped to 0-2-1 overall. "Our legs just seem dead out there."
No sooner had the words come out of his mouth, and the SMU head coach came up with the diagnosis for his team's ailment.
"Part of the problem could be that we've been going hard for two straight weeks — these guys haven't had a day off since training camp started," said Luzzi, adding that Tuesday is definitely a day of rest of his weary troops. "But that doesn't excuse their performance — we've got to play with more energy, or we could be in big trouble."
The Cardinals found themselves in big trouble early against Loras, as the Duhawks erupted for three goals in a 14-minute span midway through the first half to put the game out of reach.
"Somehow, we've got to find a way to create a little more offense," said Luzzi, whose team was shut out for the second straight game and managed just those two second-half shots on goal vs. Loras. "We'll keep at it — it's a long season and we'll just keep battling until we get it right."
