WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Hamline with three streaks on the line.
They exited with only one.
The important one.
The Cardinals, fueled by a pair of goals from both
Laura Mueller (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Melissa Mondo(Vadnais Heights, Minn.), snapped a two-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Pipers at the SMU Ice Arena.
SMU, which had its shutout streak against the Pipers ended at 286:07 — a span of more than four games — on a first-period goal by Brianna Miller, improved to a perfect 12-0-0 all-time vs. Hamline.
"It's nice to get a way," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. "But what's even nicer is that we execute in a game the type of passing that we've been working hard on all week in practice. I thought we passed the puck very well all night, and that was the difference."
That, and a slight change to his lineup.
(Madison, Wis.) Struggling to find an offensive spark, Mannor moved Mondo onto a line with Mueller and
Rachel Harrison and the trio responded with a nine-point night — two goals and an assist from both Mondo and Mueller, and three assists from Harrison.
"We had been struggling a bit generating some offense, so I decided to shake up the lines a bit — change is always good now and then," said Mannor, whose team led 1-0 after the first period and 3-2 after two, before scoring a pair of third-period goals to ice the win. "I guess (the lineup change) paid off."
