Box Score Game Summary
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team threw everything but the kitchen sink at Hamline goalie Crystal Testolin.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Testolin threw it all back.
Well, almost all of it.
Testolin stopped 34 of the 37 shots she faced, as Hamline — despite being outshot 37-30 — handed the Cardinals a 6-3 setback in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday evening.
"You wouldn't know it by the final score, but I felt we outplayed them for the most part," said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose Cardinals had snapped a two-game losing streak — getting a pair of goals from both Laura Mueller (St. Paul, Minn.) and Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) — in winning Friday's game against the Pipers 5-2. "Their goalie played an outstanding game. She was the difference."
Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the Cardinals off on the right foot, scoring four minutes into the opening period, but Hamline responded with four unanswered goals — including a pair of powerplay tallies — to take a commanding 4-1 advantage.
Madeline Loftus (Parsippany, N.J.) and Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) got the Cardinals within one, 4-3, with back-to-back gaols in the first 1:06 of the third period, but that was as close as SMU would get, as Hamline scored twice in a four-minute span midway through the period to ice the win — the Pipers' first in 12 all-time meetings vs. the Cardinals.
"It's disappointing, but I could not be prouder of the way this team played," said Mannor. "They battled from start to finish and never gave up. It's a hard one to lose, but I certainly can't fault their effort."
