Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team had a chance to snap a 35-game losing streak against St. Thomas last Saturday, only to give up 55 second-half points in a 98-62 loss to the Tommies last Saturday.
Two days later, the Cardinals had a chance to snap another long-standing losing skid – an 11-game slide against Carleton.
New night, new streak — same result.
The Knights took advantage of SMU's frigid shooting from the field — and a 43-point second half that included 18 points from Jake Phillips — as Carleton outscored SMU 43-37 in the second half en route to a 68-58 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at the SMU Gym.
Phillips, who scored just eight points in the first half, helping Carleton to a 25-21halftime edge, knocked down 4 of 6 3-pointers and was a near-perfect 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the second half and finished with a game-high 26 points.
The Cardinals led by as many as three midway through the first half, and tied the game for the fifth time in the opening 20 minutes, 21-21 on a basket by Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) with 2:09 to play, but Carleton responded with four unanswered points to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Knights picked up right where they left off to open the second half, scoring five straight points in a two-minute span to take a nine-point, 30-21 edge. Carleton built its lead to as many as 18, 63-45, with 3;16 remaining in regulation and were never challenged, as the Knights extended their winning streak to 12 in a row vs. SMU — dating back to an 80-71 victory on Dec. 12, 1998.
Terrence Smith (Broadview, Ill.) netted 16 points to lead the way for SMU, while Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) and Fiore Buccieri (Riverside, Ill.) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Cardinals (5-4 MIAC, 7-7 overall), who dropped their second straight. Zach Johnson and Dan Forkrud joined Phillips as the Knights' double-figure scorers, finishing with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
