Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team held Carleton to just 23 points in the second half of Monday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
Problem was, that was three points more than the Cardinals scored — in either half — as the Knights took advantage of SMU's frigid shooting from the field en route to a 55-40 victory at the SMU Gym.
SMU, which dropped its fifth straight and ninth in a row against Carleton, made just 11 of their 50 field-goal attempts (22 percent) — including just 6 of 26 in the first half.
And the Knights took advantage, jumping out to leads as big as 17 in the game's opening 20 minutes, before settling for a 12-point, 32-20 halftime advantage.
SMU's ice-cold shooting continued in the second half, as the Cardinals missed their first 10 field goals of the second half.
Fortunately, things weren't much better for the Knights to start the second half, as they managed just three free throws in the first seven minutes, and didn't score a basket from the field until Megan Vig's jumper at the 12:13 mark gave Carleton a 37-20 advantage.
Carleton built its lead to as many as 19 on three occasions in the third quarter and never looked back, as the three-time defending MIAC regular-season champions improved to 5-4 in the MIAC and 7-7 overall.
Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) was the only player in double figures for the Cardinals (2-7 MIAC, 5-8 overall), netting 11 points, while Megan Vig knocked down a game-high 15 points in the winning effort for Carleton.
