MOORHEAD, Minn. — Heading into Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team had scored 13 goals in its last seven games.

Against the Cobbers, the Cardinals netted nearly have that many.

SMU erupted for a season-high seven goals — the most goals scored by the Cardinals since an 11-1 rout of Northland on Nov. 23, 2005 — in handing Concordia a 7-0 setback at the Moorhead Sports Center.

"It was great to see us finally break out offensively," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win, their first shutout victory since a 5-0 blanking of Augsburg on Jan. 24, 2004. "All season long we've been struggling to score goals, and tonight they just came in bunches."

Adam Gill (Rochester, Minn.), David Gross (Grasston, Minn.) and Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) all scored two goals each, while Gill also picked up three assists to complete his career-high five-point night. Tim McNamara (Hastings, Minn.) dished out four assists, giving the SMU senior a team-leading 11 on the season.

The Cardinals' offensive explosion was a welcome sight for Olson & Co., but with senior goalie Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) between the pipes, SMU really only needed one goal. Nosal stopped all 37 shots he faced, including 14 in the third period, en route to his first career shutout.

"Curtis played very well, probably his best game of the season," said Olson. "Everyone played well — we were solid in our defensive zone, and offensively we not only created good scoring opportunities, but we also made good on a number of those chances."
