Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — There are games like last Monday's 71-68 victory over Bethel that make Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Mike Trewick smile.
And then there are games like Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Gustavus at the SMU Gym.,
The Cardinals scored the game's first basket — on a layup by Michael Batterman (Fond du Lac, Wis.) — and the last — on a 3-pointer by Eric Burroughs (St. Paul, Minn.).
In between, however, there wasn't much SMU scoring — and there was a lot by the Gusties.
Gustavus led by as many as 20 points in the first half — and by as many as 47 in the second — as the Gusties ran away with a 78-42 win over the Cardinals.
The Cardinals, who entered Wednesday's game riding a two-game winning streak, managed just 16 points in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 7 of 23 field goals, while the Gusties knocked down 16 of their 26 first-half field goals in taking a commanding 34-16 advantage into the locker room at the break.
And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was more of the same in the second half, as GAC went 17-for-26 from the field, while SMU netted 11 of 29 field goals.
Batterman led the Cardinals in scoring eight points, while Adam TeBrake's game-high 17 points led a trio of Gusties in double figures.
