ST. PAUL, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Tony Guinn, Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Thomas was another sign of the Cardinals' progress.

In 2003, the Cardinals were drubbed by the Tommies 4-0.

In 2004, in the first year under Guinn, the Cardinals dropped a 4-2 decision to UST.

A year ago, St. Thomas got a goal from Sarah Balgord in the second minute of the second overtime to lift the Tommies to a 1-0 win.

And Saturday — thanks in large part to the foot of freshman Keirra Metcalfe (Pickering, Ontario) — the Cardinals battled UST to a 2-2, double-overtime stalemate.

And Guinn couldn't be happier.

"This game just shows how far we've come in the last four years," said Guinn, whose team moved to 2-2-2 in the MIAC and 8-2-2 overall with its second conference tie in its last four games. "The year before I got here, we didn't stand a chance against (St. Thomas) — they beat up on us pretty good. But each year since, we've slowly made progress, and today, we took a point off of them, which is awesome.

"St. Thomas is a very good team, they are well-coached, they have tremendous athletes and they play a very solid game," continued Guinn. "And we had to play very well to keep up with them, which is exactly what we did."

The Cardinals got on the board first, as Metcalfe netted her fourth goal of the season early in the first half. The Tommies responded with a pair of goals, before Metcalfe closed out the scoring with her second of the game at the 30-minute mark.

"It was kind of a wild first half," said Guinn. "Both teams were creating good scoring chances and converting on them. Then in the second half and the overtimes, both teams really tightened up their defenses.

"I think the week off helped us a bit," continued Guinn, whose team had not played since a disappointing 1-0 loss to Concordia last Saturday. "We had a chance to rest up a bit and just work on some things, and it seemed to pay off today.

"To take a point off a team like St. Thomas — on their home field — that's a great feeling."
