Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team, it was just a matter of time.

It wasn't if the Cardinals were going to score against Northland goalie Bo Storozuk, it was when.

And while SMU coach Don Olson must have felt like his team would never score — after coming up empty on their first 25 shots, including 24 in the first period alone.

But once Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) netted the Cardinals' first goal 1:41 into the second period, the dam burst, as SMU erupted for four second-period goals and added two more in the third en route to a 6-2 win that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated.

"We did what we had to do tonight," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team snapped a three-game winless streak with the victory — the Cardinals' ninth straight without a loss all-time against the Lumberjacks. "It was good to see us get that many scoring chances, but we've still got to find a way to do a better job of finishing.

"Six goals was nice, but it took us 61 shots to get there."

Thanks in large part to the play of Storczuk.

"You have to give (Storczuk) a lot of credit, he played extremely well and really kept them in the game for a long time," said Olson, whose team outshot Northland 24-2 in the opening period, but went into the locker room tied 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. "Everyone on the team knew it was just a matter of time before we would get a couple by (Storczuk), we just had to keep working."

Bohn gave SMU a 1-0 lead with his third of the season and before the period ended Adam Fleishman (Vernon Hills, Ill.), David Gross (Grasston, Minn.) and Matt Staehely (Shorewood, Ill.) had also beaten the Lumberjack freshman, as SMU turned that 0-0 deadlock into a 4-0 rout.

Adam Gill (Rochester, Minn.) and Northland's Lindsey Boulter rounded out the scoring, as the two traded a pair of goals each in the third period.

"A game like this can really help a team's confidence," said Olson, whose team is now off until Dec. 2-3, when the Cardinals return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a two-game series at Saint John's. "It's nice to head into the (Thanksgiving) break with a good win, and, hopefully, we'll be able to use this as a springboard as when get back into conference play next week."
