ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams got their first glimpse of some of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition Friday evening, as the Cardinals took part in dual meets against Hamline and Augsburg.

And while the final results weren't all that impressive, coach Eric Lindquist found plenty to smile about.

"It's good to get into some competition against MIAC schools," said Lindquist, whose men fell to Hamline 141-69, while the women were beaten by both Hamline (187-43) and Augsburg (107-89). "This meet and the one Saturday (at Concordia) are similar to last weekend's dual against Luther — it's benchmark meet that will give us an idea how we stack up against other teams in the conference."

Jon Fox (Winona, Minn.), who set the school's 100 breaststroke record in his first collegiate meet a week ago, picked up his second straight first-place finish in the event, as he posted a time of 1:03.61 vs. the Pipers. Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.) also posted a first-place effort, winning the one-meter diving with a score of 220.70. Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in a second-place time of 2:07.08 in the 200 freestyle, while Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn.) added a second in the 50 freestyle (24.10).

On the women's side, Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.) led the Cardinals' charge, posting times of 2.21:05 in the 200 freestyle and 6:15.82 in the 500 freestyle. Schultz's efforts weren't the only eye-catching efforts, as Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) totaled 13.25 pints in the one-meter diving and 139.05 in the 3-meter, while Toni Nigrelli (Kiel, Wis.) went 2:21.27 in the 200 freestyle and Margaret Walsh (Chicago, Ill.) stopped the clock in 1:19.66 in the 100 breaststroke.
