WINONA, Minn. — A week ago, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team's powerplay clicked like a well-oiled machine, as the Cardinals scored four of their seven goals with the man advantage en route to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference split at Saint John's.

Friday night against Gustavus, it was more like a power outage for the Cardinals, as SMU went 0-for-7 on the powerplay.

The Gusties didn't fare much better, coming up empty on their first four power-play opportunities.

It was opportunity No. 5 that did in the Cardinals.

GAC's Mike Hosfield scored 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Gusties to their third straight MIAC OT win, edging SMU 2-1 at the SMU Ice Arena.

"They've got things going their way right now," said SMU coach Don Olson of the Gusties, who posted a pair of overtime wins over last weekend, while improving to 5-0-0 in MIAC play with Friday's win over the Cardinals. "We had our chances, especially in the third period, we just weren't able to get over the hump."

The Cardinals fell behind 1-0 midway through the second period, as GAC's Tim Ornell beat SMU goalie Dan Smith (Rochester, Minn.) with a wrist shot. That would be the only goal the Cardinal junior would surrender in regulation, as SMU kicked out 41 shots through three periods.

After kicking out the first three Gustie shots in the five-minute overtime, Hosfield finally got one past the Cardinal netminder, as the GAC senior picked up a loose puck at the top of the slot and rifled a shot over Smith's blocker.

"We weren't very sharp, especially in the first two periods. I thought we picked it up a bit in the third period, but (Gustavus) certainly seemed to have more jump in their step than we did," said Olson, who got a third-period goal from Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) to force the game into overtime. "I was very impressed with Gustavus — they are quick, they move the puck well and they do a great job of creating odd-man opportunities.

"Tonight they were the better team — hopefully (Saturday) will be a different story."
