WINONA, Minn. —
Eric Lindquist approached Friday's regular season-ending dual against St. Thomas with two objectives in mind:
1. Give the Tommies a run for their money, and
2. Make the final home meet a memorable one for senior
Lisa Salm (Chilton, Wis.) — not to mention for the rest of the team.
Mission accomplished — on both counts.
"St. Thomas is a tough, tough squad, but I thought we gave them a good battle," said Lindquist, whose men dropped a 155-27 decision to UST, while the women were defeated 146-51. "The final scores don't make it look like much of a challenge (for the Tommies), but there were some great swims on both sides."
And, with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships looming on the horizon, that's exactly what Lindquist was looking for — great swims.
"I was very happy with our performance," said Lindquist. "We are in the middle of a transition period (in terms of training) and don't normally have a meet this close to the MIAC meet, and our performances reflected that a bit.
"It's important at this time of year to keep things fresh, so we had a number of people swimming in events they don't usually compete in," continued Lindquist. "And overall, I thought everyone did a nice job."
Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) recorded a lifetime best score of 174.20 in the one-meter diving, while Salm — the Cardinals' lone senior competing in her final home meet — added a second in the 200 freestyle (2:09.51).
Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) — who broke both the 100 and 200 breaststroke school records a week ago — tried her hand at the 50 freestyle on Friday, and was out touched by UST's Kate Boran and settled for second with a time of 27.19.
"This was a great way to end the (regular) season," said Lindquist, who also got a second-place effort from Steve Weishalla (St. Cloud, Minn.) in the 100 breaststroke, where the SMU freshman posted a time of 1:15.34. "We've got some people who are a little sore and tired right now, and we've got others who are really hitting their peak at the right time.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to put it all together in two weeks (at the MIAC Championships)."
