Game Summary

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — For the first 18 minutes, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team had Saint John's right where they wanted them — in their rear view mirror.

And thoughts of a rare road victory started creeping into the minds of the Cardinals.

Then the Johnnies burst the Cardinals' bubble, scoring the final five points of the first half – and 10 of the first 12 to open the second half — as SJU handed SMU its seventh straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road loss, 71-60.

The Cardinals, who led by as many as four points in the first half, before surrendering that half-ending, 5-0 SJU run to trail 32-28 at the break. SMU shot 42 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 13 of 31 field goal attempts.

SMU put up another 31 field goal tries in the second half, but with less success —  connecting on just 10 of those 31 as SJU built leads as big as 15 and never let SMU closer than seven in handing the Cardinals their third straight loss.

Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) and Terrence Smith (Broadview, Ill.) each scored 13 points for the Cardinals (7-9 MIAC, 9-12 overall) — who fall to 2-10 on the road. Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) chipped in 10 rebounds, while Tyler Westman tallied a game-high 26 points and Craig Schafer added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Johnnies.
