Box Score
ST. PETER, Minn. — If it's any consolation, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team wasn't the first team that Gustavus beat 9-0 this season.
In fact, the Gusties' 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Cardinals Saturday afternoon marked the fourth straight MIAC shutout win for GAC, which had also blanked St. Thomas, Macalester and Bethel by the same 9-0 score.
Gustavus, which entered Saturday's match ranked No. 1 in the latest national rankings — and winners of seven straight 9-0 wins — swept all six singles matches, losing just 13 games in the process. GAC completed the sweep with 8-3, 8-2 and 8-2 wins in the three doubles matches.
"Gustavus is very good," understated SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "They're ranked No. 4 in the country for a reason. It's not that we played poorly, because I thought we played fairly well, (Gustavus) is just that much better and finishing off points than we are."
The Cardinals, who fell to 1-3 in the MIAC and 1-5 overall, return to action on Sunday against Concordia.
