WINONA, Minn. — With five matches in a two-day span — three for the women and two for the men — the Saint Mary's University tennis teams weren't about to waste any time Saturday afternoon in their nonconference matches against Bethany Lutheran.

The Cardinal women did not lose more than two games in any of their six singles matches en route to a convincing 9-0 victory over the Vikings, and the Cardinal men equalled their female counterparts effort, surrendering a total of 12 singles game in completing the SMU sweep with their own 9-0 victory.

"Both teams played very well," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg, whose women's team will face UW-Stevens Point and St. Thomas, while his Cardinal men's team will face St. Thomas, on Sunday. "We were able to get some different people into the lineup today — and hopefully we were able to build a little momentum that we can carry over into a couple of tough matches (on Sunday)."

Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) and Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) did not lose a game in sweeping their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively. Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) lost just one game in a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Thomas Vollman (Oak Park, Ill.), Dan Fahey (Brookfield, Ill.) and Dustin Kresen (Riverside, Ill.) were also straight-set winners.

The Cardinal women were just as dominating, as Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), Val Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.), Colleen Rademacher (Belegrade, Minn.) and Jenny Pater (Stillwater, Minn.) cruised to easy straight-set singles wins.

"This was a good win for both teams," said Halberg. "Everyone came out and played very well."
