NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) did his part — the rest of the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team just couldn't follow suit.
Stevenson picked up his 15th singles win of the season, posting a straight-set, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles — but that was all the Cardinals could muster, as St. Olaf cruised to a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday afternoon.
And it was more of the same for the SMU women, as
Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) and Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) posted straight-set singles wins, only to have St. Olaf win the other four singles matches and sweep the three doubles matches en route to a 7-2 win.,
"It was a tough day for us," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "The guys actually played very well, especially in the singles matches. All the matches were very close — unfortunately, we were only able to win one of them.
"(St. Olaf's) depth was just too much for the ladies," continued Halberg. "We played hard and gave it everything we had, we just couldn't handle their depth."
