LISLE, Ill. — It was a tough act to follow — a fifth-place finish in the high jump and the honor of being Saint Mary's University's second track and field All-American.
Yet, as impressive as
Megan Mason's (Rochester, Minn.) performance was on Friday,
Amanda Weinmann's was equally impressive on Saturday.
In fact, it was an encore performance to remember.
Making her second NCAA Division III National Championships appearance this season, Weinmann broke her own record in the shot put, unleashing a toss of 44-7 to place eighth overall — and become SMU's third All-American.
"Megan certainly got us off on the right foot, and Amanda just picked up right where (Mason) left off," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "To come here, against the best Division III athletes in the country and leave with a pair of All-Americans, that's pretty special."
The task of competing in two events — at the same time — proved to be too much for Weinmann's teammate,
Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.), who placed 10th in the javelin with a throw of 138-11 and was 15th in the shot put with a toss of 41-8 3/4.
"This was a great way for us to close out the season," said Nauman. "I very happy for all three of these athletes — not to mention the direction that our program is going."
