Game Summary
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Through their first five games of the season, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team's offense was running like a fine-tuned machine, scoring 24 goals en route to a perfect 5-0-0 record.
The Cardinals' defense was just as impressive, as SMU allowed just one goal — a first-half tally in a 4-1 win vs. UW-Superior last Sunday — in 450 minutes of play.
Saturday afternoon, however, Carleton threw a monkey wrench into the Cardinals' perfect run, as the Knights got a first-half goal from Miz Zutz and held on to shut out SMU 1-0.
Neither team was able to generate much offense, as SMU managed just 3 shots — including none in the second half — while Carleton got off 12 shots, two of which found their way to the net.
The Knights, who have now won their last three games by shutout, broke the scoreless tie in the 31st minute, as Zutz took a cross from Emma Dobbins and rifled a shot that went over the head of SMU goalkeeper
Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.), hit the crossbar, and caromed into the net for the game's only goal.
The Cardinals (1-1-0 MIAC, 5-1-0 overall) return to action Sunday, playing host to Ripon in a nonconference game schedule for 2 p.m.
