Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Saturday, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team picked a bad time to have an "off" day.

Sunday afternoon, Ripon picked a bad time to be the Cardinals' opponent.

The Cardinals, still smarting from Saturday's 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to Carleton — SMU's first loss of the season — took out their frustrations on the visiting Red Hawks, scoring twice in the first half and once in the second en route to a 3-1 nonconference win at Ochrymowycz Field.

"We did not play well (Saturday) — I think the wear of playing six games in eight days took its toll a bit," said SMU coach Tony Guinn. "We played much better today, and I'm sure part of that was because everyone wanted to put that (Carleton) loss behind them, forget about it and move forward."

And move they did.

Bridgette Baggio (Prospect Heights, Ill.) got SMU on the board 13 minutes into the game, netting her first of the season, while Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.) joined teammates ethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) and Melisa Entinger (Pickering, Ontario) atop the team's goal-scoring list with her fifth of the season midway through the half.

Ripon made the most of its lone shot in the first half, as Jill Jones broke down the right side and snuck a shot past the outstretched arm of SMU goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) to cut the Cardinals' gap to 2-1 at the intermission.

SMU — which attempted 32 shots to the Red Hawks' three — continued to dominate in the second half, getting an insurance goal from Emily Duffey (Richfield, Minn.) at the 66-minute mark, as the Cardinals cruised to their sixth win in seven games.

"We certainly played better today that we did (vs. Carleton)," said Guinn, whose team has now outscored its first seven opponents 27-4. "We're physically tired right now — our schedule has really taken its toll, but to be 6-1 at this point in the season is nice.

"It was nice to be able to get right back on the field and play again," continued Guinn. "We didn't have to sit and dwell on that loss (to the Knights).

"Hopefully, we've got things back on track."
