Match Summary
COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — It was just the kind of start Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Tom Farren was hoping for.
The Cardinals kicked off their season in impressive fashion, getting rounds in the 70s from three of their five players en route to a 307-319 dual-meet victory over Macalester Saturday afternoon at Mississippi Dunes Golf Course.
"This was a nice start," said Farren. "It's always nice to get that first competitive round under your belt, and I was very happy with the way the guys performed under tournament pressure."
Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the way for SMU, carding a two-over-par 74, while
Josh Wendel (Rosemount, Minn.) was a shot back at 75 and
Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) added a 76.
Bill Ryan (Western Springs, Ill.) and
Matt Hogg (Litchfield, Minn.) shot 82, 93, respectively, to round out the Cardinals' lineup.
"I thought the guys did a nice job of managing their games on an unfamiliar course," said Farren. "And if we are going to be successful this year, that's what we've got to do, stay away from the big numbers out there."
