Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — On Saturday,
Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.) proved to be the offensive hero for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team, as the SMU junior netted the Cardinals' only goal in a hard-earned 1-1 tie vs. No. 16 Macalester.
Wednesday afternoon, it was Tlougan to the rescue again.
And this time, her efforts were worth much more than a tie.
Tlougan notched her team-leading seventh goal of the season six minutes into overtime — firing a shot that went through the hands of GAC goalie Ashley Ohlson — as SMU escaped with a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Gustavus at Ochrymowycz Field.
"This team finds a way to get the job done," said SMU coach Tony Guinn, whose team is now unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1). "Lisa has been a great offensive weapon for us all season, and she has really come through when we needed her the last couple of games."
After the Cardinals and Gusties battled to a 0-0 deadlock after the game's opening 45 minutes, SMU finally broke through, as
Keirra Metcalfe's (Pickering,, Ontario) shot off a free kick from teammate
Jamison McClure (White Bear Lake, Minn.) slipped past Ohlson 20 minutes into the second half.
The Gusties pulled even with seven minutes remaining in regulation as Ashley Voightlander lofted a perfect shot from the right side that floated over the outstretched arms of SMU goalkeeper
Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) and into the upper left-hand corner.
"I think the biggest key for us was that we held our composure — even after (Gustavus) got that tying goal late in the second half," said Guinn. "We were able to create a great scoring opportunity, and Tlougan cashed in on it.
"I'm very proud of the way this team hung in there — we are banged up bunch right now," said Guinn, who, already playing without injured starters
Bethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.), lost starter
Bridgette Baggio (Prospect Heights, Ill.) to a severe shoulder injury early in the second half vs. the Gusties. "With all the injuries we've had, we've needed some people to come off the bench and contribute, and they have all been up to the challenge."
